For table completion IELTS Listening questions, read the table as a comparison before the recording starts. Identify what each row represents, what each column asks for, and what form every blank needs. During the audio, track the active row, wait through corrections, and enter only the detail that fits that exact cell.

The main challenge is not hearing a true detail. It is keeping that detail attached to the correct option and category.

Every blank has two coordinates: the active row and the requested column. Confirm both before typing.

What is IELTS Listening table completion?

The official IELTS Listening test format includes form, note, table, flow-chart, and summary completion. A table groups related information into rows and columns, so its visible structure gives you clues about the answer type and the path of the recording.

Instructions may set a word or number limit. The printed labels may already provide a unit or part of the grammar, so enter only the missing information.

How is table completion different from form and note completion?

TaskVisual structureMain tracking job
Form completionIndividual fields about one person, booking, or serviceFollow field labels and corrections
Note completionHeadings and bullet-point hierarchyFollow the speaker’s topic structure
Table completionRepeated categories across several optionsKeep each detail in the correct row and column

What should you map before the audio begins?

Table clueQuestion to askPrediction
TitleWhat options are being compared?Courses, tours, facilities, products, or stages
Row labelsHow will I know the speaker has moved?Name, letter, place, or category change
Column headingsWhat relationship does each gap represent?Cost, time, benefit, problem, location, or requirement
Words around gapsWhat grammar and format fit?Number, singular noun, plural noun, adjective, or short phrase
Printed unitsIs the unit already supplied?Write “45,” not “45 pounds,” if £ is printed

How do you follow the table while listening?

Use MAP–TRACK–WAIT–PLACE:

  1. MAP: preview the row order and column categories.
  2. TRACK: keep one finger or cursor on the active row.
  3. WAIT: listen through correction and contrast language.
  4. PLACE: enter the final detail only after it fits both coordinates.

When the speaker moves to a new course or option, move with them. One uncertain cell should not make you lose the next row.

What does a row-confusion trap look like?

Table columns: Tour, departure time, included meal.

Audio: “The river tour was originally listed for nine, but it now leaves at nine thirty and includes lunch. The hill walk still starts at nine, although you need to bring your own food.”

RowDepartureMeal
River tour9:30Lunch
Hill walk9:00Not included

The first “nine” belongs to the river tour but is corrected. The second “nine” belongs to the hill walk. The same number is true in one row and outdated in another, so coordinates matter more than recognition.

Which correction signals should you hold open?

SignalLikely functionYour action
“originally… but now”Old detail replaced by current detailEnter the final version
“I thought… actually”Speaker corrects an assumptionKeep the cell open
“includes X, whereas Y…”Contrast between rowsMove each detail to its named option
“not the morning one”Rejects a nearby optionWait for the positive choice

How do you check whether an answer fits the cell?

  1. Does it belong to the named row?
  2. Does it answer the column heading?
  3. Does it fit the grammar around the blank?
  4. Have you used only the missing words or number?
  5. Does it obey the exact word limit and spelling?

The official IELTS Academic sample tasks include computer-delivered Listening table-completion practice, transcripts, and answer keys. Use the transcript only after a one-play attempt.

How should you recover after losing your row?

  1. Leave the uncertain cell visibly blank.
  2. Listen for the next row label or repeated column category.
  3. Rejoin at that coordinate instead of replaying the missed detail in your head.
  4. During checking time, use any notes you captured; do not invent unheard information.

What should a table-completion error log contain?

Error typeDiagnostic questionNext drill
Wrong rowWhich label did I fail to track?Mark every row transition in the transcript
Wrong columnDid I confuse cost, time, benefit, or requirement?Say both coordinates before answering
Early detailWhich correction signal followed?Hold answers through “but” and “actually”
Wrong formWhat grammar or printed unit did I ignore?Predict every cell before listening
Lost sequenceHow long did I stay on the missed answer?Practise a one-cell stop-loss rule

Final action: name both coordinates

Open the IELTS Ai Pro Listening practice area, choose a table-completion set, and label the answer type in every column before pressing play. Use the spelling, plurals, and word-limit checklist before submitting, and apply the 10-second recovery routine if you lose one cell.
