IELTS Writing Feedback: Turn Comments Into a Better Rewrite

Use IELTS Writing feedback to choose one priority, rewrite the weak section, compare the change, and retest it in a new timed response.

IELTS Writing feedback helps only when it changes your next draft. Do not try to repair every comment at once. Choose the highest-impact pattern, rewrite the affected part yourself, compare the two versions, and then test the same skill in a new timed response.

This turns feedback from a list of faults into a repeatable practice loop. The aim is not to make one essay perfect; it is to make one writing decision more reliable.

Use feedback in four moves: PRIORITISE one pattern, REWRITE the weak section, COMPARE the change, then RETEST it under time.

Why does IELTS Writing feedback often feel useful but change nothing?

A long report can create the feeling of progress while leaving the learner with too many possible actions. “Improve coherence,” “use a wider range,” and “develop ideas” describe broad areas, not the exact decision to practise next.

The official IELTS Writing preparation resources organise assessment around Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. IELTS Ai Pro feedback uses those criteria as a practice lens, but an automated band estimate is not an official IELTS result.

Which feedback point should you fix first?

Feedback patternPriority decisionSmallest useful rewrite
You answered only part of the promptTask Response firstRewrite the thesis and the underdeveloped body paragraph
Your ideas are relevant but difficult to followCoherence firstRewrite one paragraph with a clear point-to-explanation sequence
Several words sound impressive but are inaccurateLexical control firstReplace five risky choices with precise, familiar language
Complex sentences repeatedly break downGrammar control firstRewrite three sentences with safer clause boundaries
Many small issues appear across all criteriaChoose the issue that blocks meaningRepair one paragraph, not the whole essay

How do you turn a broad comment into a trainable action?

Translate each broad comment into an observable before-and-after test. If you cannot tell whether the action happened, the action is still too vague.

Broad commentTrainable actionProof after rewriting
Develop your ideasAdd one mechanism or consequence after the main reasonThe reader can answer “how?” or “so what?”
Improve cohesionGive each paragraph one job and use clear reference wordsEvery sentence supports the opening point
Use better vocabularyReplace vague nouns and verbs with topic-accurate wordsMeaning becomes more exact without sounding forced
Use complex grammarCombine two related ideas only where the relationship is clearThe sentence is accurate and easy to read aloud

The current public IELTS Writing band descriptors reward relevant development, logical organisation, precise language, and controlled grammatical range. They do not require every sentence to be long or every word to be uncommon.

What does a focused paragraph rewrite look like?

Original paragraph: “Public transport is good for cities. There are many traffic problems, and governments should improve buses. This will be beneficial for everyone and make society better.”

Feedback pattern: the position is relevant, but the explanation remains general.

Rewrite: “Reliable bus networks can reduce urban congestion because commuters are more willing to leave their cars at home when services are frequent and predictable. If a worker can reach the city centre every ten minutes without searching for parking, public transport becomes a practical alternative rather than a last resort.”

The rewrite does not add a memorised statistic or rare vocabulary. It explains the mechanism, gives a concrete situation, and keeps every sentence attached to the paragraph’s main point.

Should you accept an AI rewrite of the whole essay?

Use a model rewrite as a comparison, not as a replacement for your work. If a tool rewrites everything, you cannot see which decision you learned to make. Keep your meaning, change the target section yourself, and ask whether the new version answers the feedback more clearly.

  1. Save the original sentence or paragraph.
  2. Write your own revision before viewing an alternative.
  3. Compare relevance, clarity, accuracy, and development.
  4. Keep only changes you can explain and reproduce.
  5. Ask a qualified teacher for human assessment when an official-score decision matters.

When should you write a new essay?

Do not immediately produce another full response. First prove that you can repair the selected pattern without a timer. Then use a short transfer drill, followed by a fresh timed task.

  1. Repair: rewrite the weak paragraph with notes available.
  2. Reduce support: rewrite a similar paragraph from a new prompt in ten minutes.
  3. Retest: complete a full timed response and check only the chosen pattern first.
  4. Record: save one before-and-after pair and one next-time rule.

This is the same one-change practice principle used in the flexible IELTS Speaking routine: produce a real attempt, diagnose one pattern, repeat with one deliberate improvement.

What should your feedback log contain?

Log fieldExample
Priority patternExamples appear before the explanation is clear
EvidenceBody paragraph 2, sentences 2–3
Rewrite actionAdd the mechanism before the example
Transfer ruleAfter every reason, answer “how does this happen?”
Retest resultThe next essay used the sequence in both body paragraphs

Final action: rewrite one paragraph, not the whole essay

Open the IELTS Ai Pro Writing practice area, submit one response, and choose a single feedback pattern. Rewrite only the section where that pattern is visible, then compare it with your original. Use the paragraph-flow method when organisation is the priority, or the Task 2 example guide when development is weak.
